There is a danger in starting a fire; you will never know how many bridges you will burn in the process. However, sometimes it isn’t a bad thing, as it may prevent you from going back to a place, where you should never have been at, to begin with.
Friends come and go, but real friends stay; chances are, if someone is in the past, that person deserves to stay there. You cry over friends you will never have back, people you once loved and bridges that have been burnt. Notwithstanding, there is a reason why these bridges have been burnt in the first place. The past is in the past. Therefore, you only have so much room in your life, so begin to save it for people who deserve it.
Proverbs 17:17 ( NIV)
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity
“Choose your friends carefully.”
Dear Minister Ferguson:
I am not sure where your burnt bridges devotional came from–whether it came from painful personal experience or not–but I had some thoughts come to mind as I read your first devotional on burnt bridges. The first thought was: “Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you, in Christ Jeus.” The Lord gave this verse to me many years ago, and I have rested in it many, many times. Another thought came to me that God is in charge of ALL our circumstances. I am learning this fact through the book Jesus Calling by Sarah Young. Another thought, now that I am thinking about this, is the awesome scriptures in Eccesiates about seasons. I absolutely love the seasons Scriptures. There are many seasons in our lives–little ones and big ones, and–maybe–there are even seasons for friendships. But, then, if there is a season for a friendship, maybe it wasn’t a Biblical kind of friendship since Scripture says “A friend loves at all times…” which is forever and forever (to me this means no season). Maybe we can love a friend at all times, and not be in regular contact with the friend? Well, all that was a little convoluted, and I have no conclusion as regards the season/friendship thought, but hope and pray this was helpful in some way.
I will leave these thoughts with you. If your devotional was based on personal experience, I pray that something within these thoughts will help you gently through this season of friend-change.
In Jesus, who loves us all more than we can know, Mary Anderson

Amen Mary! God bless you for such an uplifting and encouraging feedback. I like your notion regarding, “Biblical kind of friendship” which connects to the Scripture, “A friend loves at all times.” So true, and it’s a fact. Thank you!
