Burden is defined as a load, but not just a typical one. It is a very heavy load. Therefore, if you have a burden carrying around, it is one that is weighing you down because it is very heavy. What burden are you carrying around with you right now?

Your burden could be a troubled marriage or relationship, a stressful job, a wayward or disabled child, a loved one who is struggling with a debilitating or terminal illness, grieving the loss of a loved one, a difficult financial situation, or even a stagnant spiritual life. Notwithstanding, if you do not identify the situation as a burden, you will not be able to give it to the Lord.

You are encouraged to cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you. He will not permit the righteous to be moved (Psalm 55:22). Likewise, do not just give him some of the burden, but all of it. Also, do not become anxious to take back the burden when you already gave him control of it. You are reminded to cast ALL your anxieties on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).

Remember that you are sent out as sheep among wolves (Luke 10:3). The closer you are to the shepherd, the safer you are from the wolves. The Lord is your shepherd (Ps. 23:1). A good shepherd’s duty is to take care of the sheep (Ps. 23:1-2: Luke 2:8; John 10:2; 21:15). The shepherd loves his sheep so much, that he lays down his life for them (John 1:29; 10:11; 15:13; Heb. 13:20). The shepherd knows his sheep and they know him (John 10:3-4; 10:14-15; Ps. 100:3; 79:13). The shepherd keeps his sheep together, so that they are not scattered. He will search and find any sheep that is gone astray (Ezek. 34:11-16; Luke 15:4-7; John 10:16; Ps. 78:52).

Jesus is the head shepherd over the churches, which contain all his sheep. Jesus gave Peter a command three times to “feed my sheep,” in response to Peter’s admission of love for him (John 21:15-17). Peter obeyed Jesus’ command, and exhorted the elders in the churches of Asia to be a shepherd and feed the flock under their care (1 Pet. 5:2). This command was not only given to Peter, but to all the shepherds in the local churches, who would lead Jesus’ sheep.

3 Ways to Show Love to a Hurting World

In Luke 10, Jesus tells the story of a Samaritan man who helps a wounded Jew. At this point in time, years of tension had led to a centuries-long conflict between Jews and Samaritans.

But instead of letting the Jew die on the side of the road, the Samaritan stopped what he was doing, noticed the man’s pain, and went out of his way to help. The Samaritan showed compassion and empathy…when nobody else would.

Then, Jesus ends this parable by telling His followers, “You, go and do likewise.”

In a world filled with conflict and hardship, how do we actively live out Jesus’ words in a way that is helpful?

Here are 3 ways we can follow the Samaritan’s example and love our neighbors:

Place Yourself in Someone’s Pain

Sharing someone’s pain allows us to taste what God did for us when He came as a human to endure the cross. When we choose to experience what someone else is going through, we can then show that person true compassion.

Sacrifice Your Plans and Position

The Samaritan invested his time, his money, and his resources into saving the hurting man, just as Jesus surrendered Himself so that we could have abundant life. Sacrificial love costs us something—but the return is healing and forgiveness.

Take Specific Action

The Samaritan showed the Jewish man that he cared by taking care of him. It was that decision that led to restoration. In the same way, we must be willing to repeatedly act in ways that demonstrate empathy, humility, and grace. Compassion, in order to be effective, has to lead to action.

So, who in your life is hurting? How can you step out of your comfort zone and into their pain? Your decision to do that might just lead to healing and restoration.
