“The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus” was told by Jesus in the gospel of Luke 16:19-31. This denoted emphatic theological notion on the present and the future. Both men were presently living on earth, but one was rich and the other was poor. The rich man disregarded the poor man’s predicament. To point out, he showed no empathy, love or compassion to Lazarus. However, both men would eventually pass from the present life on earth, to their future destinations –Heaven and hell. Consequently, Lazarus was at peace and comfort in Abraham’s bosom in Heaven, while the rich man was facing torment in hell.

Additionally, the rich man begged Father Abraham to send Lazarus to come and quench his torment; but his request was refused (v.24). Notwithstanding, his plea presented a situation of pay-back, so to speak. In their present life on earth, Lazarus was desiring to be fed with the crumbs from this rich man’s table, but his plea was totally ignored (v.21). Now, this man was in hell feeling what Lazarus felt on earth, when he was living the rich life, and Lazarus was living the poor life. In other words, this parable denoted that our evil on earth will eventually have dire consequences.

Further, the rich man made a request to have Lazarus go to his father’s house to warn his brethren not to come to the place of torment that he was in. This request was also denied. Father Abraham said that they had Moses and the prophets to warn them, but the rich man believed that they would not listen to them. Instead, he thought if Lazarus go to them from the dead, they would repent. But Father Abraham told him that they would not listen to Lazarus, if they did not want to listen to Moses or the prophets.

Accordingly, this parable depicted another type of exhortation or public plea to get the attention of people, especially rich people who would treat others, who were less fortunate than themselves with disdain, unkindness, and lacking in compassion, that there would be dire consequences for this type of evil.

Once upon a time there was this girl who had four boyfriends.

She loved the 4th boyfriend the most and adorned him with rich robes and treated him to the finest of delicacies. She gave him nothing but the best.

She also loved the 3rd boyfriend very much and was always showing him off to neighboring kingdoms. However, she feared that one day he would leave her for another.

She also loved her 2nd boyfriend. He was her confidant and was always kind, considerate and patient with her. Whenever this girl faced a problem, she could confide in him, and he would help her get through the difficult times.

The girl’s 1st boyfriend was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in maintaining her wealth and kingdom. However, she did not love the first boyfriend. Although he loved her deeply, she hardly took notice of him!

One day, the girl fell ill and she knew her time was short. She thought of her luxurious life and wondered, I now have four boyfriends with me, but when I die, I’ll be all alone.’

Thus, she asked the 4th boyfriend, ‘I loved you the most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?’

‘No way!’, replied the 4th boyfriend, and he walked away without another word.

His answer cut like a sharp knife right into her heart.

The sad girl then asked the 3rd boyfriend, ‘I loved you all my life. Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?’

‘No!’, replied the 3rd boyfriend. ‘Life is too good! When you die, I’m going to marry someone else!’

Her heart sank and turned cold.

She then asked the 2nd boyfriend, ‘I have always turned to you for help and you’ve always been there for me. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?’

‘I’m sorry, I can’t help you out this time!’, replied the 2nd boyfriend. ‘At the very most, I can only walk with you to your grave.’

His answer struck her like a bolt of lightning, and the girl was devastated.

Then a voice called out: ‘I’ll go with you. I’ll follow you no matter where you go.’

The girl looked up, and there was her first boyfriend. He was very skinny as he suffered from malnutrition and neglect.

Greatly grieved, the girl said, ‘I should have taken much better care of you when I had the chance!’

In truth, you have 4 boyfriends in your lives.

Your 4th boyfriend is your body. No matter how much time and effort you lavish in making it look good, it will leave you when you die.

Your 3rd boyfriend is your possessions, status and wealth. When you die, it will all go to others.

Your 2nd boyfriend is your family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for you, the furthest they can stay by you is up to the grave.

And your 1st boyfriend is your Soul. Often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the world.

However, your Soul is the only thing that will follow you where ever you go. Cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now, for it is the only part of you that will follow you to the throne of God and continue with you throughout Eternity.

Defeating the Devil

The devil brings disaster, mayhem, confusion, hurt, terror, chaos, deception, distraction and defeat. Likewise, the list of negative connotations could go on and on. Simply put, he is like a thief who comes to steal, kill and destroy: On the other hand, Jesus came that you might have life more abundantly” (John 10:10).

Notably, there are many people today who are living a life of defeat, because they are so overwhelmed with tribulations, and they have somehow lost their zeal and faith in the Lord. Consequently, losing their zeal and faith in the Lord have prevented them from successfully defeating the devil.

scripture

In your weakest moment, that is when you have to be on the look-out for the devil. He likes to strike when you are down and out, as this is the point where you are most vulnerable to his attacks. He also uses great disguise in his tricks to defeat you. With this in mind, you have to be fully aware of the devil’s trick and distraction, in order to know how he operates, so you can defeat him.

In Ephesians 6:10-18, the Apostle Paul gave some very astounding encouragements and several key tools to defeat the devil. He advised you to put on the whole armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil, meaning his tricks and tactics. This is so, because you wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities; against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Spiritual Warfare

The devil is a spirit; therefore, flesh and blood cannot defeat him. He was cast out of Heaven along with other fallen angels. The devil apart from utilizing fallen angels, utilizes evil spirits around, as well as humans who fall prey to his whims.

By and large, the devil has a lot of forces and powers to work for him. Alternatively, the Holy Spirit is a spirit, and God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). Considering this, the Holy Spirit will help you to fight against the devil, as this is not a fist fight, but a spiritual fight.

In Matthew 13:44-46, Jesus says, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”

Jesus tells about two men, both of whom sold everything for the kingdom of heaven. To those men, God’s eternal kingdom was so valuable that they were willing to give up everything they had in order to invest in it.

That’s exactly the same attitude God wants us to have toward wealth. Money is an excellent servant but a terrible master. Unfortunately, many people in society are mastered by their money, unable to control their greed.

Yet God is more important than all these things in the world. He requires that we be willing to sell all for Him.

Mark 10:17-22 tells the story of a rich man’s encounter with Jesus: As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good — except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'”

“Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

He owned great wealth, but really his wealth owned him. Remember that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21).

This man’s heart was so attached to his money that his money owned him. His attitude is very different from that of the two men, who sold everything for the kingdom of heaven.

If, like this man, you become so hungry to own more money, be aware that really your money will own you.

When All Hell Breaks Loose!

The devil brings confusion, hurt, chaos, mayhem, strife, war, evil, and vengeance. He will want to attack your health, your finances, your children, your relationship, your job, and steal your happiness and joy.

The devil does not like to see people prosper and bless. Therefore, he enjoys your mayhem and tribulations, and if you do not stand up to him, you will allow him to get the better of you. By doing so, you will continue to walk in defeat. In light of this, you have to learn how to be a victor, and not a victim of the devil. When you throw a pity party, the devil sees that, and continues to follow you around, because he knows you are about to throw in the towel.

When you are under attack from the devil, and all hell has broken loose in your life, it is easy to just be weak, and feels sorry for yourself, but you should have a spirit of command and determination.

In James 4:7-11, there are some tools that you can use to help you to defeat the devil. The Scripture advises you to submit yourself to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

For you to fully defeat the devil, you will have to first submit yourself to God. How do you submit yourself to God? You should draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. You should cleanse your hands from sins, and not be double minded. In other words, you can’t be saved and be a sinner at the same time. You can’t serve God and the devil. You have to chose one.

Joshua reiterated this to the people of Israel,  And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)
